Choosing a Newborn Photographer | Houston Newborn Photography

You just found out you are expecting a new little bundle of joy!  Now is the time to start considering how you want to capture these precious life’s moments.  Because your little one will only be this size for a small time and you will want to remember all those tiny details.  Aside from your wedding photos, newborn photos are one of the most important photos you will ever have.  The photographer will not only be capturing these moments but will be handling your fragile newborn.  You will want peace of mind knowing that your baby is in the best hands possible. Here are the 4 important things to consider when choosing your newborn photographer. We hope that if you are located in Houston, TX you will choose Emily Crump Photography for your Newborn Photography session.

Choosing a Newborn Photographer

1. ARE THEY TRAINED AND HAVE EXPERIENCE?

One of the most important things to ask a newborn photographer is what kind of training / experience they have. All newborn photographers will spend a lot of time handling and, in some cases, posing your newborn.  As a result, you will want a photographer who is comfortable with your new baby and who knows how to handle them appropriately. There is no requirement for having a formal qualification before you can call yourself a newborn photographer, but there are many opportunities for photographers to learn including:

  • Workshops run by very experienced newborn photographers
  • Mentoring with very experienced newborn photographers
  • Online courses
  • National and International Associations

Ideally, your photographer will have a learned from a combination of these and have experience of photographing a number of newborn babies. As a newborn photographer at Emily Crump Photography, Emily, makes your baby’s safety is her number one priority.

First and foremost, she is BLS certified through the AHA to ensure she was properly trained to handle your little one.  Over the 12 years Emily has been in business she has mentored under various experienced newborn photographers and attended industry newborn photography workshops. Emily is also member of the PPA and NAPCP which aids in keeping up with photography industry standards.  In her 12 years in business Emily has photographed close to 200 precious newborns.  Emily was named “Best Newborn Photographer” for 5 years straight. And “Best of Tomball in Newborn/Family Photography” for 3 years 2019-2022

2. WHAT IS THEIR STYLE?

There are a two main styles of newborn photography: posed and lifestyle.

Lifestyle photography is candid and not “set-up” or posed.  This often means photographing you doing “everyday” activities with your baby. Like bathing, changing, feeding and holding your baby in your home. Posed sessions include curly sleepy images of your baby.  The photographer will have a soft beanbag or cushion set up to pose your baby in various positions.  And have several props and blankets to create images for you to remember forever.  This is very important that you start by picking which style you are drawn to as it will save you a lot of time in searching the perfect photographer.

Emily’s style is a mix of lifestyle (capturing family interactions) and posed (working with newborn only).  She will start by capturing photos of the family interacting / holding newborn together.  This will include siblings and pets.  At the end of each session Emily will concentrate on a few lightly posed images of baby.  Emily will bring a light colored blanket and other items needed to posing or you can provide your own blankets and “props”.

HOW MUCH IS THE INVESTMENT?

The cost of Newborn Photography can vary greatly. How experienced the photographer is, their level of training and the type of equipment they use are all factored into pricing. Professional photographers also have business expenses such as insurance, continual education, website maintenance, rent, childcare and LOTS of taxes. When you book a session with a photographer who is running things legally, the prices will reflect that. It all goes back to the saying – “you get what you pay for.”

All newborn sessions include high resolution images via digital download and clients are welcome to print them as they wish.  No additional purchases are required.  Every image is given in both color and black and white.  Clients are encouraged to ask Emily about the purchase of art prints and other photography products.  You can find all pricing information on the Investment page.
